G. Michael Mason, aka Skool54, is somewhere between an enigma and a ‘late bloomer’ who decided to begin a new career as a composer, arranger and performer when he turned 70. Yep, you read it right. Skool54 is now 71. In a little more than a year he has created over 150 original songs, released three singles:
‘Thirsty’, ‘Love Brings Freedom’ and ‘What Are We Becoming’?, a song about homelessness in Dayton.
if that's not enough, plans to drop his first album later this month. The album, ‘Outta Skool and Offa The Chain!’
will showcase Skool54's range and diversity as a musical artist. He is particularly excited to introduce his listeners to his collaboraters. whom he affectionately refers to as ‘the Gang’. ‘The Gang’ are Artificial Intelligence entities that Skool54 uses as vocalists and musicians on many of his compositions.
Skool54 is father to Aimee and Mykel Mason and the grandfather to Brayden Michael Mason.
A decade before he began his musical journey, Skool54 retired from a thirty year career as a hospitality Sales and Marketing executive for Interstate Hotel Group, Hilton International, Holiday Inn Worldwide and Best Western. Prior to that, he was with Forsyth Memorial Hospital serving as Systems Manager, Management Engineering Analyst and Director of Equal Employment. He then went on to found ‘Reduce Infant Deaths Foundation’, a nonprofit organization that worked closely with, and was cited for leadership by, the Governor's Commission on Infant Mortality Reduction in North Carolina. The organization was extremely successful and effective at creating a partnership between the local employers and the healthcare community, and exhibited that by obtaining permission from the top employers in the Winston-Salem/
Forsyth County area to to conduct onsite educational information to women of childbearing ages, who were employed by those companies on the importance of early access to prenatal care services. Other highlights in his pre-musical career include serving as Team Housing Coordinator for Wake Forest University during the 1996 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Winston-Salem, NC and acting as liaison for San Jose California on the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC), which developed the plans for the San Francisco Bay Area to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
He graduated from Winston-Salem State University in 1976.
